DEMONSTRATION

Demonstration - Dennis Schwind - Winged Vases based on a demo by Tom Crabb at the 2007 AAW Symposium in Portland Oregon and Tom's article in the Fall 2005 issue of Woodturning Design.

Picture 023.jpg (115598 bytes) Picture 025.jpg (108425 bytes) Picture 026.jpg (130432 bytes) Picture 033.jpg (143757 bytes) Picture 035.jpg (134555 bytes)
Dennis talks about the article in Woodturning Design and the concept of turning on the Bias developed by Tom Crabb After marking the layout the blank is mounted on the lathe Turning starts at a slow speed with light cuts taking note of the "ghost image" The body has been formed ready to determine where the wing will be located  Finishing off the bottom surface of the wing and ready to start turning the top form of the wing
Sorry, no pictures exist of the wing exploding!  Even I learned something from this demo.  Use tight grained woods.  I used Elm which I discovered to my embarrassment does not hold together as well as Box Elder, Maple or Walnut.
